🧮 Do You Need a Calculator for the CMA Exam?

Yes, if you want one. The IMA allows it, and that part of the question takes about thirty seconds to settle.

The more useful question sits underneath it. How much of the CMA exam is really about calculation? It is easy to overemphasize calculation practice when planning your study, and a look at the Part 1 content outline shows why that's a risk.

Here's what this post covers. The calculator rules, quickly. Then what the Part 1 outline suggests about the balance of the exam, what the less quantitative material asks of you, and what that means for your preparation.

The calculator rules, quickly

The IMA permits a basic non-programmable calculator with up to six functions, plus four financial models:

  • Texas Instruments BA II Plus
  • HP 10bII+
  • HP 12c
  • HP 12c Platinum

Bring only an approved calculator, and confirm the current requirements before test day. The CMA Handbook is the authoritative source, and exam-day rules can change between editions. Don't plan around alternatives at the center.

That settles the calculator. Now the more important question.

A large share of Part 1 isn't computational

Start with the two domains that are primarily conceptual rather than calculation-focused: Internal Controls and Technology & Analytics. Together they account for 30% of the Part 1 content outline.

That figure is a starting point, not a ceiling.

The other four domains aren't purely quantitative either. Planning and budgeting, performance management, cost management, and external financial reporting all include conceptual material alongside the computational work. You can be asked why a budget behaves a certain way, or which costing method suits a situation, without running a calculation.

So the share of Part 1 that doesn't reward calculation practice is meaningfully larger than the domain weights alone suggest. Exactly how much larger is not something anyone can tell you. The IMA publishes weights by content domain, not a split between quantitative and conceptual questions.

What the outline does describe is a broad body of knowledge. Computation is one skill it tests, not the organizing principle.

What the conceptual material covers

Three broad areas, all drawn from the Part 1 learning outcomes:

  • Controls and security. Segregation of duties, access controls, encryption, firewalls, backups, business continuity, and control testing.
  • Systems and technology. ERP systems, relational databases, data governance, the systems development life cycle, cloud computing, SaaS, and robotic process automation.
  • Data and analytics. Business intelligence, data mining, data visualization, and the difference between structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data.

Consider what a topic like automated invoice matching involves. The material here concerns which controls catch exceptions, how those exceptions get handled, and where the process risks sit. That's a different kind of understanding than arriving at a total.

What this means for how you study

Get fast with your calculator. Speed on routine computations buys you time for the harder problems.

But a study plan built mainly on calculation drills leaves a large portion of Part 1 underprepared. A few adjustments help:

  • Work multiple-choice questions by subject, so controls, technology, and analytics get the same dedicated attention as variance analysis.
  • Move to timed, mixed-topic sets as exam day gets closer. Pacing is a separate skill, and it applies to conceptual questions as much as computational ones.
  • Review your misses by topic rather than by score. Repeated errors in one area point to a specific gap. An overall percentage doesn't.

Conceptual gaps hide well behind a decent score. They're also the ones easiest to leave unaddressed.

The Bottom Line

Bring an approved calculator, confirm the rules in the current Handbook, and know your device well enough that it doesn't slow you down.

Then widen the preparation around it. Two Part 1 domains center on controls, systems, technology, and analytics, and conceptual questions turn up throughout the rest of the outline as well. Give the reasoning in those areas the same attention you give the formulas, and the exam will look much closer to what you prepared for.
